Tim Carter

Grand Junction, Colorado

I started out my ski career on Alpine skis racing professionally, and instructing at Aspen. Then in the 70’s I took up Nordic ski racing and found I loved this sport just as well. And there were plenty of races to conquer, including the US Master’s Cross Country Championships 4 years in a row. I have competed and have won Championship races around the US and Europe.

I enjoy coaching both classic and ski skating, and have been teaching and coaching for over 40 years. I coached at the West Yellowstone XC Ski camp for 5 years with the team of National XC Champions. I have great success in bringing people into the sport and turning them into life-long skiers.

I have lived and skied in the Roaring Fork Valley since 1981. I work at the Aspen and Snowmass Cross-Country Centers, and I am passionate about sharing my love of Nordic skiing. I want to help my students become more efficient and have more fun. In 2013 I skied the Finland Border to Border Tour.

I especially enjoy skiing, racing, and teaching on the beautiful Grand Mesa Nordic Council trails. In the off season I am an avid cyclist, backcountry skier and outdoor enthusiast!

Susy Elison

Susy Elison

Carbondale, Colorado

I love snow. Growing up in Buffalo, New York, taught me to embrace winter and all the wonderful things it brings. Spending a year in Finland while I was in college solidified my love of winter and Nordic skiing. I have cross country skied on 3 continents – North America, Europe, and Antarctica – and have skied Finland’s Rajalta Rajalle (Border to Border) Tour twice.

After 40+ years in Colorado and a 30-year teaching career, I retired in 2014 and have been spending my time enjoying all the great outdoor activities I can. I love to teach on Grand Mesa and help skiers find the joy in gliding across snow!

I started nordic and backcountry skiing over 35 years ago when I lived and worked in Yellowstone during the winter. Currently, I work as a Park Ranger at Grand Teton National Park in the summers. Nordic skiing is my favorite winter activity. I enjoy the exercise, skill development, camaraderie, and beauty of being outdoors.

My favorite students are beginner and intermediate skiers. I welcome you to come take a lesson with me on the world-class Nordic skiing trails on Grand Mesa. You will improve your skills, have fun and enjoy a lifetime sport.

Regardless of your experience level, taking a ski lesson will help you be a more effective skier. And the more things you learn to do on your skis, the more fun you’ll have. I enjoy teaching people of all ability levels and ages. My students range from first-timers to life-long enthusiasts to people with disabilities.

  • Professional Ski Instructors of America: Level III Certified Cross-Country Ski Instructor
  • U.S. Center for Safe Sport: SafeSport certified. I am trained in protecting students from emotional, physical and sexual abuse.
  • U.S. Ski and Snowboard: Level 100 Coach. Training through U.S. Ski Team expanded my skills and knowledge for coaching to competition-level performance.
  • Special Olympics Colorado: Level III Coach. As a head coach of Special Olympics Ski Team for 14 years I gained insight into making skiing and racing possible for everyone.
