SKYWAY SKUFFLE RACE RESULTS
SKYWAY, JAN 31, 2016
We managed to dodge the weather bullet and got two great days of ski racing in for our big collegiate racing weekend. Actually, we weren’t completely unscathed as Saturday’s wind and Sunday’s soft tracks on new snow made for good challenges but my unfounded fears were that it would be much much worse. Six schools were represented at Saturday’s Classic Sprints, the host team of Colorado Mesa University, joined by University of Wyoming, US Air Force Academy, Western State Colorado University, Colorado College and, winning the big travel award, Oregon State University Cascades. The school teams were joined by an avid cadre of citizens for the Skyway Skuffle 10K on Sunday. Per usual, the University of Wyoming set the standard providing all of the winners but they were pushed by good competition.
The Saturday race consisted of an individual time trial 1K which was used to seed the subsequent elimination heats. Each heat had 5 or 6 racers going head to head with the top two advancing to the next round. The finals had Elise Sulser just crushing the other women while Mason Vincent snuck in ahead of a tight pack of men. Exciting stuff to watch!
Women: 1. Elise Sulser, UWyo; 2. Sierra Jech, UWyo; 3. Bob (yes!) Maddox, WSCU
Men: 1. Mason Vincent, UWyo; Kimmo Lajunen, CMU; Kyle Bochanski, UWyo
For the 10K on Sunday racers skied up the Arroyo and Vista Valley, did the big climb at the back end, returned on Vista Ridge and then skied over to finish around Sunset. Sam Wiswell of UWyo managed that tough course better than anyone followed by now unaffiliated racer Jamie Mothersbaugh who was recently with CU. Heading up the citizen racers was Lew Kirkegaard. Again Elise Sulser easily handled the women’s competition. She was followed by her teammate Meghan Kent. The top female citizen was long-time stalwart Helen Carlsen. Racers were treated to prizes from REI, Ela Family Farms, Kannah Creek Brewing and Board and Buckle. Sustenance was excellent in the form of EVO Hemp Bars, KIND Bars and Justins Nut Butters along with Tom’s big cookies and tomato rice soup. Thanks to Danielle Burritt and Rick Peterson for serving it up and to Terry Brown for punching the timing clock!
