Snowshoeing & Snowbikes

Snowshoeing

The best trails for snowshoeing on the Grand Mesa include the Mesa Lakes Loops, West Bench Trail, Griffith Lakes/Lake of the Woods, Crag Crest trail, and the Ward Trail System. In addition, Skyway now has a designated 1 km trail for snowshoeing.

We encourage you to enjoy snowshoeing off of the groomed trails. If you must snowshoe on the groomed trails, please walk single file along the outside of the skate lane to prevent collisions with skiers and to avoid damaging the skate and classic tracks. Snowshoes can quickly deteriorate GMNC’s grooming work and increase grooming expenditures significantly.

Snowbikes

The United States Forest Service (USFS) prohibits snowbikes on the Skyway, County Line, and Ward Trail Systems. Snowbikes, also known as fat bikes, are typically allowed on snow packed roads and snowmobile trails. The main staging area for the snowmobile trails is the Mesa Top parking lot. This is next to Lands End Road, which goes to the observatory, and is also a great option for fat bikes.

Please check with the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forest Service Office to determine where snowbikes are allowed:
