Every year, GMNC organizes several races on the Grand Mesa at the Skyway Trail System. Our race events are held on some of the best snow and terrain you can find in the Rocky Mountains!
Grand Mesa Nordic Race Series
The Grand Mesa Nordic Race Series is a series of four Nordic ski races with awards for each race as well as for the cumulative point winners for the whole series. The series emphasizes ski racing for fun and personal fitness for skiers of ALL abilities. We make the races challenging enough for top athletes but also comfortable for the rest of us who just want to get out and test our skills against a fun course. You can expect plenty of hot soup and some great giveaways thanks to sponsors such as Justin’s Nut Butters, Kind, ProBar, and Ela Family Farms! Grand Mesa Nordic Series points can be earned at 4 races this season:
- WinterStart 5K. December 3, 2017. Classic race 11 am, Skate race 12:30 pm. CANCELLED
- Grand Mesa Classic 10K. December 30, 2017, 11 am.
- Skyway Skuffle Freestyle 10K. January 28, 2018, 11 am.
- Mesa Meltdown Freestyle 20K and 5K. March 18, 2018. Both start at 10 am.
Points will be awarded for each racer’s best 3 finishes out of the 4 to declare a Male and Female Overall Series Champion. Any ties will be broken by order of finish in the Mesa Meltdown 20K. (Note that no points will be awarded for WinterStart 5K Freestyle, or Mesa Meltdown 5K.)
Location: All races are held on the Grand Mesa at the Skyway Trail System on Colorado Highway 65.
Registration: RACE DAY ONLY in the Skyway parking area beginning approximately 1 hour before race start time.
Entry Fees: $15 for GMNC members and $25 for non-members for all races.
Colorado Mesa University Racing
Each winter, GMNC hosts a college invitational race at the Skyway Trail System, featuring the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Nordic Ski Team. The race draws teams from across the United States Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association’s Rocky Mountain Conference. The race features elimination sprints, a spectator-friendly event that requires skiers to compete head-to-head around a challenging 1km course. This season’s race will be held January 27, 2018 at 11:00 am.
NOTE: Road closures do happen on the Grand Mesa and weather can be so nasty even us Nordic stalwarts find it necessary to postpone a race. Please check the website and our Facebook Page for late-breaking news regarding races before heading up! For more information, contact: Tom Ela 970-434-9753
