Grooming Operation

Grooming is the core of GMNC’s mission.

In 2016, GMNC purchased a Pisten Bully 400 snowcat, which is used for grooming the Skyway and County Line trails. (See Jean Thomas Lambert Foundation). The trails have been widened to accommodate the larger tiller, and GMNC ski trails are now considered among the best in the state. The PB 400 sets two pairs of classic tracks on one side of the trail, with a wide skating lane filling out the rest of the 18’ width.

The Ward trails are groomed using a snowmobile with grooming implements, as is the Summit Trail at Skyway.

GMNC’s grooming crew consists of three people who generally work three or four days per week, depending on conditions and trail usage.

The combination of high quality grooming, abundant and consistent snow conditions, and uninterrupted rolling terrain create a world-class Nordic skiing experience.

The grooming program began in 1990 when GMNC obtained a permit to groom the Ward Trail System. At that time GMNC purchased an Alpine snowmobile with grant monies from Delta and Mesa Counties, and the Grand Junction Lions Club. Initially, grooming was performed entirely by volunteers using a track setter provided by Powderhorn Ski Resort.

Eventually, with the support of Craig Maguire of the USFS, grooming expanded to the Skyway and County Line trail systems and new trails were developed. Additional grants were obtained from the Lions Club, the Goodwin Foundation, and Delta County, to upgrade the grooming equipment. As membership increased, GMNC was able to hire a groomer.

In 2007, GMNC was awarded a grant from the Jean Thomas Lambert Foundation to purchase a new Pisten Bully 100 snowcat. This machine raised the quality of grooming to a very high standard.

In 2016, the GMNC was the recipient of another very generous grant from the Jean Thomas Lambert Foundation, which enabled GMNC to purchase a Pisten Bully 400 snowcat. GMNC ski trails are now considered among the best in the state.
