First Annual Grand Mesa Nordic Loppet: Final Race Report

As the sun rose on the Grand Mesa, the beauty of the mountains came to light as Tom Ela and I were setting up for the first annual GMN Loppet race early Saturday morning. While we were there early, Kenton had been out even earlier grooming the entire 21km course in the wee hours of the morning. Without the efforts of our grooming crew, the GMN Loppet would not have been nearly as enjoyable to ski since the course had received around 6” of new snow earlier in the week. The groomers were also responsible for marking the entire course with the blue barriers and they did a fabulous job marking every intersection clearly.

The temperature was around 28 degrees at 7:00 am with no breeze and not a cloud in the sky. I knew this was going to be a great day and now all we needed were a few racers. When people asked me how many I expected, I optimistically replied around 20 but in my head I was going to be happy with 10. I even told a few people that called during the weeks leading up to the race that as long as we had one racer, we were going to run the Loppet this year…even if I had to be that single racer! By 9:00 am we had 42 racers signed-up with 25 in the 42km race and 17 in the 21km race. Even before the race started, I felt like it was a success! We had exceeded my optimist goal by 100%.

The typical Mesa/Delta County crowd was represented well but were out numbered by other Coloradans and even one from our neighboring state of Utah (see race results). Many commented on the wonderful snow conditions that held up well for the entire race. As temperatures climbed through the morning (48 degrees by noon) and the blue bird sky held, racers continued to push their limits on the challenging course, and upon finishing were rewarded with GMNC chili and a huge selection of sweets and beverages. An awards ceremony was held recognizing the first place finishers in both races with great prizes from our sponsors followed by a raffle that just about covered every racer.

This was my first time race directing a Nordic race (or any race) and I know I have some room to improve for next year (I have a list). While I am a “rookie RD”, I do know racing and experienced first hand during the planning of the Loppet that these races do not happen without a lot of help from volunteers and sponsors. There were at least 10 volunteers on race day (note to self…make a list of who volunteered to recognize them better in the race report) and my race mentor, Tom Ela, was invaluable with his suggestions throughout the planning process and on race day. The sponsors were so kind to donate their products with a value of over $500 in prizes (see below), and giving them away to the racers was the highlight of my day!

Finally, thanks to everyone who showed-up and raced the First Annual GMN Loppet! I am looking forward to the 2nd Annual GMN Loppet next year, and  would be interested in hearing from anyone what they liked most about the race and where we could improve. If you have any pictures of the race you would like to share, please feel free to email them to me and we’ll post them on our website and Facebook page.
